Horticulture Report (2020- 21)

Horticulture is a significant and upcoming sector in Karnataka. Horticulture has proved to be the best diversification option for agricultural land use, because of assured and the remunerative returns to the farmers. According to “Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare database -2021” published the total Area and Production of Horticultural crops in India are 274.76 lakh hectares and 3346.02 lakh M.T. respectively. Karnataka State has occupied 1 st place with an area of 26.21 lakh hectares under Horticulture contributing 9.56% to the total Horticultural Area of the country. The State stands 7 th with 241.50 lakh M.T. of production contributing 7.19% to the total production of Horticultural Crops in the country. The geographical area of Karnataka is 190.50 lakh hectares, of which cultivable area is 128.46 lakh hectares, constituting 67.43 % of the geographical area. Net area sown during the year 2020-21 was 114.53 lakh hectares. Out of this, Horticultural Crops covered 26.21 lakh hectares. Horticultural area in the State accounted for about 20.40% of the total cultivable area and 22.88 % of the Net area sown. Out of the total horticultural cropped area in the year 2020-21, Plantation Crops covered 12.95 lakh ha. (49.44 %); Vegetables were grown in 5.21 lakh ha. (19.89%); Fruit crops covered 4.32 lakh ha. (16.47%); Spice crops covered 3.32 lakh ha. (12.68%) and Commercial Flowers, Medicinal & Aromatic plants together occupied 0.40 lakh ha. (1.53%). Accordingly, the total horticultural production in the State during the year figured at 241.50 lakh M.T. In this year, 81.86 lakh M.T. (33.90%) of Fruit Crops; 108.85 lakh M.T. (45.07%) of Vegetable Crops; 10.88 lakh M.T. (4.50%) of Spice Crops; 36.47 lakh M.T. (15.10%) of Garden/Plantation Crops and 3.44 lakh M.T. (1.43%) of Commercial Flowers, Medicinal and Aromatic crops were produced. In recent years, due to the introduction of the high yielding varieties of crops, improved technology and also due to commercialization the productivity of horticultural crops has improved. Recently, efforts are being made by the Government of Karnataka to boost-up the agricultural exports, mainly of Horticultural produces like fruits, vegetables and flowers, through an effective Agricultural Policy.
