Save Water, Chorus Young Eco Warriors at Earthian Contest

Bengaluru: The 23 winners of the fourth edition of the Earthian contest hosted by Wipro, with water as its theme, was held in the city on Saturday. More than 500 teams had participated in the global sustainability education programme. 

“With so many apartments coming up in the city, lakes have been polluted and blocked. Our project Aahutiyaaguttiruva Keregalu focused on this,” said Neha, a Class 9 student of Prakriya Green Wisdom School, whose team was among those awarded by Wipro chairman Azim Premji. Neha said her team had chosen Varthur, Bellandur, Kaikondanahalli and other lakes located in and around Sarjapur for their presentation.

“We wanted to tell how they are being polluted because of the rise in apartments around them,” she said. Her teammate Dhruva said he hopes to work further on this in the coming years. Savani, another student from Prakriya, was among the winners for her project on using nanotechnology for waste management and water treatment.

Aishwarya, a first-year engineering student at Sastra University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, and her team were awarded for their project on a water treatment plant using solar energy. “There is a need to decrease consumption of water and energy. We will take this (idea) forward and hope to spread awareness among students,” Aishwarya said.

‘A Critical Problem’: Azim Premji said there is an urgent need to focus on water-related issues, especially in Bengaluru. If not tackled now, the situation could go out of control in another decade, he said.
