Deccan Herald-NS, Bangalore, 29th July 2014
The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) will now boast its first one-of-a-kind ‘Science on a Sphere’- a unique visualisation system that will be open from Tuesday. To commemorate the golden jubilee celebrations on Monday, a ‘How Things Work’ gallery and a Dinosaur Enclave was set up at the Museum.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, SMKumar, Educationist, VITM, said: “ The ‘Science on a Sphere’ has been set up with an intention to convert complex data into simple visual format for better understanding.” The sphere that is housed inside the museum was set up with an investment of Rs two crore and will display visuals directly from the satellite, obtained with help from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. To begin with, shows on the Solar system, ocean and tsunami, earth, atmosphere and climatology, would be on.
This apart, the Dinosaur Enclave was one of the primary attractions for children who were at VITM on Monday. One of the students, who was looking at the set up in awe, pointed out that even the skin of the life size dinosaur looked real. Dr MKPanduranga Setty, member, working committee, VITM, said that they have requested the State Government to provide land for expansion. “Due to lack of space around the present location on Kasturba Road, land has been allocated near the Kempegowda International Airport. The paper work for the same is going on,” he said.
Setty added that due to the space constraint, it is difficult to accommodate many children at a given point in time and many schools have to postpone their visit due to this. Besides, claiming that the City has been one among the centres for innovation, he said, “Models developed here are sent to places all over Karnataka, Tirupati and Tirunelveli.
Meanwhile, GSRautela, Director General, National Council of Science Museums, said that the museum in the City stands second after the one in Kolkata. “Over three lakh students visit the museum every year,” he said, adding that the science centres in Mangalore and Puducherry would soon be ready for inauguration. KGKumar, Director, VITM,who recalled the happenings since the museum was inaugurated, said that the foot-fall had crossed three crores since 50 years. The event was inaugurated by senior scientist URRao. The entry fee is Rs 25.
