About 50 corporate companies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on Tuesday came forward to develop government schools across the State under the School Nurturing Programme. However, no formal commitments were made. The Department of Primary and Secondary is now planning to chalk out a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility scheme to involve these stakeholders.

During the first meeting with the Department of Primary and Secondary Education, the companies as well as NGOs discussed poor infrastructure, construction of toilets and the quality of teaching. The meeting was chaired by Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar. Rajkumar Khatri, Principal Secretary, Department of Primary and Secondary and Mohammad Mohsin, Commissioner for Public Instruction were present.

Mr. Khatri told The Hindu that representatives from several top companies, such as Biocon, Toyota, ABB and BHEL, participated in the meeting. “We received a lot of feedback and suggestions and plan to come up with a comprehensive policy to involve corporates in this programme,” he said. Representatives of companies and NGOs were given brochures which stated that the department would reciprocate in various ways.
