Karnataka High Court summons Principal Secretary on school safety guidelines

Bengaluru: The high court on Tuesday directed the Principal Secretary to primary and secondary education department and the nodal education officer of BBMP to be present before the court on Wednesday. The court was hearing a batch of petitions filed by Karnataka Private School Joint Action Committee, Karnataka State Private School Management Federation and several educational institutions questioning the security guidelines framed for schools in Bengaluru for the safety of children.
In an interim report filed by additional advocate general, it stated that out of 589 government schools, four have implemented the guidelines in full and 279 have implemented it partially. “The report makes it clear that in 298 government schools have not implemented the circular.” The court further highlighted that as per the report there was no implementation of the guidelines by the BBMP in its schools.
“The government should be a model for others to follow. Without the government implementing the guidelines, it cannot expect the private schools to implement the same,” court observed, while further directing the petitioners to state the effective steps taken in the matter of implementation of the guidelines, more particularly with regard to the gate control and installation of CCTVs on the school premises.
