Assessments Derived Conservation Strategies for Lakes of Bangalore: Tanks and lakes play an important and vital role in our ecosystem by helping in irrigation as well as recharging ground water in the surrounding areas. There are around 36,000 lakes in Karnataka of which the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department owns 33,000 small lakes and rest are under the jurisdiction of the Minor Irrigation Department.
Lakes in Bangalore : Lakes in Bangalore are all built and interconnected by an intricate network of canals. In the last century Bangalore city has had as many as 262 Lakes, Ponds and marshy wetlands which ensured high level of groundwater table and also used to maintain local climate in the city. The process of various anthropogenic activities and population leading to unplanned urbanization and expansion has resulted in the loss of many lakes in the naturally undulating terrain of Bangalore city. Most of the lakes have been converted into cesspools due to direct discharge of industrial effluents, domestic sewage and unregulated dumping of solid wastes. According to Lake Development Authority (LDA), currently, there are 1,570 waterbodies (including Kunte) in Bangalore
