Newsletter entitled:  Grow more sandalwood trees to harvest wooden gold- In nature we are bestowed with many wonderful trees, the wood of which yield diverse chemicals and products including gums, resins, oils etc. Among all products, oil from sandalwood trees is the most costly and which is used for diverse prod-ucts for the humankind. The word sandalwood has been derived from Chandana (Sanskrit), Chandan (Persian) and Santal (French). San-dalwood tree, Santalum album has more than sixty names – Shri Gandha , Chan-dana, Aninditha, Arishta Phalam, Bhadhrashraya, Sarpavasa, Chan-drakanta, Gancharasa, Thailapar-na, Malayaja are some of them. Karnataka and Tamilnadu used to contribute 85% of the world produc-tion of Sandalwood. The traditional sandalwood areas in Karnataka are  Shimoga, Dharwar, Haveri, Hassan and Bangalore dis-tricts. Decades long research by the erstwhile Sandal Research Centre and later by Institute of Wood Sci-ence and Technology in Bangalore, Karnataka and many other organi-zations in India, has unraveled many mysteries of the sandal wood tree. Research is still ongoing glob-ally to find out how this wonder oil develops in the tree. It is not easy to know the secret of the production of the marvellous oil in the wood. Growing a sandalwood tree is like growing gold in your land. No doubt it is the renewable gold which can fetch prosperity to the grower and enhance the wealth of the nation. But unfortunately there are no large plantations in India............................................................
