Editorial Note: ENVIS Centre EMPRI has been publishing quarterly newsletters ‘PARISARA’ covering various concurrent Environmental issues. During 2014-15, ENVIS centre, EMPRI published the first two newsletters themed on Sandalwood and the third on Mangroves. The current fourth quarterly newsletter ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management in Karnataka’ is focused on Waste Management - which is a burning issue in all the urban centers across the world, and throws light on the several aspects of SWM, MSW rules & regulations, existing Practices in Karnataka, and innovations in reuse of the plastic fraction as a composite material. The root of the Solid Waste Management crisis lies with the callous attitude of the people in addition to unchecked, unregulated urbanization. In this direction, lots of programs are to be chalked out to change this attitude of the people in addition, to putting proper scientific practices in place. The municipal authorities have to come out of the clutches of the mafia who are responsible for improper disposal and need to include the Self Help Groups, NGOs and interested people who are genuinely working for a satisfactory solution to Solid Waste Management crisis. With a hope that this newsletter will throw some light on the problems of Municipal SWM, I request our esteemed readers to send their comments, criticism and opinions on this edition which will be immensely valued and adapted towards improving the quality and content of the Newsletter in the days to come.

Best Wishes

Shri Vinaya Kumar K H, IFS,

Director Research & ENVIS Coordinator, EMPRI
