 BUTTERFLIES OF KARNATAKA

Butterflies and flowers add beauty to Nature

Flowers in the plants add beauty to the nature, but when a butterfly hovers around flowers, it adds more beauty and vibrancy to nature. Butterflies possess some of the most striking color displays found in nature. As they fly from flower to flower, their brightly colored wings shine and make flutters in the minds of the beholder. In fact the beauty of the flower and its colours are for attracting the butterflies. No wonder these beauties are made for each other. Butterflies thrive on nectar from the flower for its nutrition, flowers in tern get pollinated with pollen grains brought by butterflies, this mutual benefits helps to maintain their coexistence in nature. If we look on to the evolutionary background, it can be seen that both flowers and butterflies have evolved together.
How do the butterflies get pretty colours? The structural color of butterflies is quite interesting. The vivid colors of their wings is from the specific structure of their wings. The color can shift as the observer moves. This effect is known as iridescence. The butterfly wings are covered by thousands of microscopic scales, split into two to three layers. Each scale has multiple layers separated by air. When light hits the different layers of the butter-fly wing, it is reflected numerous times. The multiple reflections intensify the colors. The combination of all these reflections causes the very intense colors that is seen in many spe-cies. The combination of a butterfly’s structural and pigmented color can create interesting effects. A butterfly’s rich color can help it to act as camouflage, for mate attraction and as a warning signal.
